Ra, Ra, Rupee

Hello Fellow Gallopers,

Though this entry is not a photography related one, I thought I would share this latest development in the Indian Economic and Financial scene as it marks a milestone for the Indian economy, currency and the country as a whole.

The hitherto-humble Indian Rupee has finally been conferred a unique symbol and is all set to come of age and gain its distinct and unique identity.

The unique symbol, above, is an amalgam of the Devanagari ‘Ra’ and the Roman capital ‘R’ without the stem and two parallel lines running on the top. The parallel lines symbolise the ‘=’ sign.

Designed by D Udaya Kumar, an IIT Mumbai Post Graduate, the symbol is set to gain the Indian Rupee a place in the Club of Elite Currencies of the world that have similar distinct identities such as the US Dollar ($), the Euro (€), the Japanese Yen (¥) and the British Pound (£). The unique symbol would also distinguish the Indian currency from the Rupee or Rupiah of Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia and would help to reflect the strength and robustness of the Indian economy.

There are no plans, at present, to either print or emboss the symbol on currency, notes or coins.

Till next time, take care and gallop free.
