Hello Fellow Gallopers,
A few days ago I got the opportunity to spend a day in Dundee, Scotland’s fourth largest city that lies on the north bank of the Firth of Tay.
When in Dundee, I visited the HM Frigate Unicorn which is the World’s most original wooden warship and is currently docked at the Dundee Central Waterfront. A sailing frigate was a powerful cruising vessel, heavily armed and fast and the Unicorn would’ve been one of the elite ships of the fleet.
His Majesty’s Frigate Unicorn was built for the Royal Navy and launched in 1824 and is the world’s last intact warship from the days of sail – one of six oldest ships in the world and Scotland’s only representative of the sailing navy.
Unicorn is considered to be the best preserved of all historic wooden ships in the world from her era. The Unicorn represents the last great flourish of wooden shipbuilding and also illustrates the birth of the iron steamship.
